How to Embed a Video

There are several options for adding videos to your course. This guide covers embedding videos from services such as YouTube or Vimeo. If you are not using one of these services and you have a video file on your computer then please see the Panopto section here instead.

Embedding a video to play inside your course, instead of linking to an external site enhances the navigation of your course.  Students will not need to leave Canvas in order to view an embedded video. Embedding a video directly in Canvas avoids distractions like other content or comments sections that are not part of your course. (Note: Some videos do not allow embedding and must be linked.)

Simple Method:

If your video is on YouTube then you can choose to use this simpler method where Canvas automatically embeds the video for you. (Please note however that the video player is smaller compared to the advanced method explained below):

  1. Use your web browser to navigate to the specific video you wish to embed such as vimeo or youtube.com, then click on the address bar (1) to copy the video URL (2).

  2. Go to the Content Page (or other item within your Canvas course) where you wish to embed your video and click Edit.
  3. Paste the video URL (3) into the Rich Conent Text editor text input field and then press spacebar or enter on your keyboard. The link text should then turn blue.

  4. Click Save (4). Your video should now be embedded in Canvas and begin playing after clicking on the Play button.

Improved (advanced) Method

The above method is a major improvement over linking students to external sites to view videos. However, if you are familiar with editing HTML code then it is possible to improve on this further by using a larger embed player. This is done by utilizing the embed code generated by services such as Youtube and Vimeo.

Follow these steps if you would like to give this advanced method a try:

  1. Use your web browser to navigate to the video you wish to embed.
    • If your video is on Youtube then you can right-click on the video and select "Copy Embed Code".

    • If your video is on Vimeo then you can click the Share button and copy the code from the "Embed" text field.

  2. Go to the Content Page (or other item within your Canvas course) where you wish to embed your video and click Edit.
  3. This will take you to edit mode of that asset. Click View on the toolbar above the text input field and select HTML Editor.

  4. Move your flashing text cursor down to where you would like to your video to appear or rather embed your video and paste the HTML embed code (4).

  5. Click Save (5). Your video should now be embedded in Canvas while utilizing the full width of the page.
