Browser Tips
Throughout the years UCLA Extension has been using Canvas, we have documented some great tips related to supported browsers:
- Internet Explorer is not supported by Canvas.
- Mac users may find it easier to use Firefox rather than Chrome.
- If you are not able to see a tool or feature correctly in one browser, please update the browser or try another one.
- Clearing your browser's cache and cookies may help when trying to resolve viewing issues in Canvas.
- Some course areas in Canvas, such as Course Syllabus, Zoom, and Videos, require third-party cookies to be enabled. Check this setting and learn how to enable third-party cookies for your browser.
Internet
It is recommended to have a minimum Internet speed of 512kbps.
Troubleshooting Checklist
If you are having trouble with Canvas, explore these best practices below:
Computer
- Your computer must meet the minimum requirements.
In order to prevent issues in Canvas, make sure that your computer meets Canvas' Computer Specifications.
Browser
- Check that your browser is compatible.
Canvas is compatible with the most current versions of browsers. Ensure your browser and the version are on the Supported Browsers list in this article. We recommend checking the requirements page at least once per quarter. - Try another browser and computer.
If you encounter issues with Canvas, try another browser on your computer. It is possible that the browser is not compatible with Canvas. If you have the same issue, try another computer. - Clear your browser’s cache.
Sometimes your browser’s Cache needs to be cleared, especially if you changed your password recently or if you bookmark the Canvas Login page. See How to Clear Cache on a Mac or How to Clear Cache on a PC for more information.
Connection
- Use a secure and reliable connection.
We advise that you use a wired broadband connection. You should also use a Windows or Macintosh computer, as most mobile applications do not offer full Canvas functionality at this time. - Verify your connection is not obstructed.
If you are using a work laptop, check with your IT team to ensure there are no connection issues or Antivirus or Firewall software blocking your connection to Canvas.
Other
- Verify your enrollment.
If a course that you are signed up to teach does not appear in your Canvas dashboard or list of courses, chances are the course has not yet been published. To verify this, click “Courses” and “All Courses." Your course should appear as not published. If you do not see your course, contact your Department to verify your enrollment in the course via the enrollment system Destiny. - Check the status of Canvas.
Canvas has a very high uptime rating of 99.9 %, so chances are their site is not down. Check the Canvas Outage Status Page. You can subscribe to the outage page to get updates on the rare occasions Canvas does go down for maintenance.
