Canvas provides an Accessibility Checker tool within its Rich Content Editor (RCE) that allows you to check for common accessibility errors within pages, announcements, assignments, discussions, and quizzes.
To use the Accessibility Checker in Canvas:
- Look for the Accessibility Checker icon at the bottom of the RCE. If a number appears on the top-right side of the icon, the Accessibility Checker has detected one or more issues that you should correct.
- Click the Accessibility Checker icon. A sidebar will open on the right side of the screen that displays the following information:
A. The number of accessibility issues detected on the page.
B. An explanation of the issue you are currently reviewing.
C. Guidance on how to correct the issue.
D. An Information icon that you can click to display a more detailed explanation of the issue.
E. A blue overlay within the RCE highlights the issue referenced in the Accessibility Checker sidebar.
F. Prev and Next buttons allow you to move between issues if the Accessibility Checker has identified more than one issue.
- Correct the issue following the Accessibility Checker's prompt. In the example screenshot, the contrast ratio between the text color and its background color is too low, so you would use the slider provided by the Accessibility Checker to adjust the text color until you reach a better contrast ratio.
- Click Apply after you resolve each issue. The Accessibility Checker will apply the change you selected within the RCE, before displaying information for the next issue (if multiple issues are identified). Once you have resolved all issues, the Accessibility Checker will indicate that no issues exist.
- Click the X icon to close the Accessibility Checker sidebar.
