The Student View feature in Canvas enables you to view the general structure of your course, access course content, submit assignments, post to discussions, and view grades as your students do. It creates a Test Student user in your course, so you'll see a student with this name listed in the Grades area of your course.
Be aware that some parts of Canvas do not work in Student View: Attendance, Inbox, differentiated assignments, groups, peer reviews, and profiles.
Tip: Use Student View Before Launch
Be sure to check your course in Student View prior to its launch to ensure that content is published and visible to students.
Enter Student View
To enter Student View:
- At the top right of your Canvas course, click Student View. It appears in the same location in several different areas: Home, Modules, Announcements, and individual pages and assignments.
- Confirm that a box appears around the page and a menu bar is displayed at the bottom of the page with options to "Reset Student" and "Leave Student View." This indicates that you are now viewing your course as a test student. You'll notice a few key changes:
- Course Navigation Menu shows only the menu items that your students will see.
- Modules displays only items that are visible to students (i.e., they are published and do not have "lock" date restrictions).
- Grades shows individual assignments and scores for the Test Student account.
- When you are done testing your course as a student, go to the bottom menu bar and click Leave Student View.
Reset Test Student
If you completed some activities in your course while in Student View that are appearing in the Test Student's account, you can remove this data at any time by resetting the Test Student account. Be aware, however, that Test Student activity that involves interactions with other students, such as replies within a discussion, cannot be removed.
To reset the Test Student account in your course, while in Student View, click Reset Student. You will remain in Student View and can continue testing your course.
