Canvas gives you the ability to duplicate modules and the items within them (e.g., pages, assignments, discussions, and files), but be aware of some limitations:
- Modules containing quizzes created using the Classic Quiz tool in Canvas cannot be duplicated. Only quizzes created with the New Quizzes tool can be copied.
- A module containing an External Tool (LTI) assignment cannot be duplicated.
To duplicate a module:
- In the course navigation menu, click Modules.
- Locate the module you want to duplicate, then click the three-dot icon to the right of its title, which will open its options menu.
- Click Duplicate. The existing module and all of its items will be copied as a new module.
- Note some additional changes you may need to make to duplicated modules and items:
- They will have the word "copy" added to the end of their titles, so you will need to edit them.
- They will be in an unpublished state, so you will need to publish them before students can access them.
Tip: Working Around Items That Cannot Be Duplicated
If a module cannot be duplicated, the Duplicate option will not appear in its options drop-down menu. If you have an item that cannot be copied in your module (i.e., a quiz created using the Classic Quiz tool or an External Tool (LTI) assignment), move the item out of the module first, then duplicate the module.
Duplication Notes
- Duplicating a module defaults the copied module to an unpublished state.
- All copied assignments, pages, and discussions within the duplicated module will include the word "Copy" at the end of their titles.
- If a module cannot be duplicated, the Duplicate option will not appear in the drop-down menu.
- If you set prerequisites or unlock dates for the original module, those same parameters will not carry over to the copied module.
