The Modules area of your Canvas course acts as your virtual classroom space—where students find their learning materials, interact with one another, and submit assignments. The way you organize and structure the Modules area of your course is essential to providing your students with a seamless learning experience.
Canvas allows you to add text headers and indents to organize and control the flow of your course materials.
Using Text Headers
You can use text headers to organize materials within a module. To add a text header with a module:
- In the course navigation menu, click Modules.
- Click the + icon to the right of a module's title. The Add Item to Module window will appear.
- Click the Add drop-down menu, then select Text Header.
- Type the header's text in the Header field.
- Click Add Item. The text header will appear at the bottom of your module.
- To move the text header to a different spot, click the grid icon to the left of the text header, then drag it to the location where you would like it to appear.
Indenting Items in a Module
You can indent items to create a structure and content hierarchy within a module. For example, you can create a Week One Overview page, then indent lesson pages below it.
To indent a module item:
- Click the three-dot icon to the right of the item you want to indent.
- Select ⟶ Increase indent.
In this example, three lesson pages are indented under the Week One Overview page. This creates a visual reading hierarchy for students and indicates that the content is related.
At any point, you can further increase the indentation level of module items by following the same steps above.
