A course syllabus template is automatically populated inside your Canvas course, and you can edit it to provide information relevant to your course. If you are missing a syllabus template, reach out to ATLI at atli@uclaextension.edu.
Tip: Prior to Editing Your Syllabus
- Maximize your internet browser window, ideally so that it takes up your whole screen; otherwise, the option to edit your syllabus may be hidden. When this happens, you'll have to use the window's scroll bars to make sure you can see all available options.
- The Course Syllabus area can time out when left open in Edit mode, so we recommend composing content in the Microsoft Word syllabus template, before pasting it into the relevant sections of your Canvas syllabus so that you don't lose your work.
To edit your Course Syllabus, click the tabs below and review the two-step process.
Step One: Enable Edit Mode
To enable Edit Mode:
- From the course navigation menu, click Course Syllabus.
- At the top of the page, click Syllabus to open the drop-down menu.
- Select Edit to open the syllabus editor which appears as a sidebar to the left of the syllabus.
Step Two: Edit a Section of the Course Syllabus
Each section of the Course Syllabus has its own editing options. To edit a section:
- Click the Pencil icon next to the section that you want to edit, and the Edit Item window opens.
- Enter your content in the Notes field.
- Click Save. The Edit Item window closes and your section edits are now visible on your syllabus.
Please note that some sections of your syllabus are locked and cannot be edited:
- The Description section can only be edited by the Program Department.
- Institutional Policies and Additional Policies are pre-populated with standard UCLA Extension policies.
